Howard Yezerski Gallery is pleased to announce Temperature/Time an exhibition of recent paintings by Matt McClune. In this recent body of work McClune continues his exploration of color and surface in relation to their support. Pulling thin veils of pigmented acrylic medium over a flat aluminum support the paintings in this exhibition represent a change in the way McClune approaches the application of the acrylic in his work.

Now more than before, his surroundings and the atmosphere of his studio permeate the work. The paintings reflect the temperature and the light that occurs in that part of France in late winter and early spring. The cold tonalities of the support and the unheated studio are for McClune the beginning of the dialogue. Using acrylic pigment and the unpainted anodized aluminum support which reflects in a diffused way the opaque light that surrounds it, McClune is able to capture the ethereal light and space in his un-heated studio.

In the damp and cold of winter the paintings reveal subtle hints of dark blue and green with thin veils of black superimposed on the surface, imitating the fog outside of the studio and coldness that seeps into the cement flooring of the studio. As spring comes the light outside changes as does the temperature. Subtle greens reflect the new grass outside and the light blue of the sky picks up subtle hints of yellows and burnt oranges. These paintings are far from being a monochromatic work, the interplay between light, anodized aluminum, suspended pigment, and the thick/thinness within the vertical sweep pf the paint, together creates a constantly changing experience
.
