Paul Shakespear continues to explore and push his paintings on
a journey started almost thirty years ago, which carries on in
his latest exhibition opening May 4th at Howard Yezerski Gallery.
Creating work that continually changes both formally and conceptually
he is noted for his abstract paintings that can be dense and ethereal.
He connects with the viewers through his work by making beautifully
engaging paintings that can be understood and related to.
In this exhibition Shakespear pushes his work, using acrylic paint
and gloss medium as he has in the past. He alternates between
paintings with multi-layered high gloss surfaces and paintings
with heavily built up textured mat surfaces. In some cases the
two are juxtaposed creating paintings that have surfaces that
shift and conjure up subtle undulations that move between the
natural and the abstract. Quiet and contemplative the paintings
offer the viewer a relief from the violent and harsh realities
of the contemporary wo
